- Women make up 70.4% of the social work profession
- White women therapist represent about 77% of the profession
- Black Americans account for 3% of the profession
- Out of that 3%, 2.77% represents Black women
- Women make up over 72% of those that participate in therapy
- Women of color utilize therapy less than their white female counterparts but experience higher levels of microaggressions than their white female counterparts personally and professionally
Understanding the microaggressions that women face in the many spaces that women operate and function in are important to meeting clients where they are and supporting them in developing the advocacy skills and coping skills to manage during these difficult times when they present in therapy.
- In this workshop, participants will learn the definition of microaggression and be able to identify the three types of microaggressions.
- Participants will learn best practices in strategies to eliminate microaggressions as well as methods of support for clients.
- Participants will learn the cultural and psychological impact that microaggressions have on women of color.
This is relevant for social workers in order to provide ethically sound support to minority populations.
